Anna Marie Bucan Cost was born in Kansas City, Kansas at the family home 346 N. Thorp on July 8, 1927 to John M. and Anna Louise Zupetic Bucan who emigrated from Croatia. She was baptized at St. John the Baptist Church; her Godparents were Mike and Rose Barbarich. She lived in Kansas City her entire life, spending her first years in the Strawberry Hill area and attended primer at St. John’s orphanage. In 1933 she began school at St. Peter’s in Kansas City, KS, graduating in 1941. Her family then moved to 18th St. and in 1945, she graduated from Ward High School. She played drums in the band, belonged to clubs and sororities and participated in many activities. After high school, she attended the Kansas City Business College, graduating in 1946.
She met her future husband at Ward High School as he also played in the band. He left school to join the Navy and fought in WWII while Ann waited at home. On January 31, 1948, she married James Michael Cindrich Cost at St. Peter’s Cathedral. When her husband was called to the Korean War, Ann worked at the Fairfax Military Plant. She then began her career at Providence hospital retiring in 1992. Following her retirement, she volunteered at Providence many years. She also volunteered at the Strawberry Hill Museum and Christ the King church. She was an associate of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, KS. She served her parish as eucharistic minister and homebound minister, among other duties. She was an officer and member of Christ the King Solos and St. John’s Senior Citizens.
She held dear the memories of her travels around the world with Jim, enjoying a variety of cultures and countries. She felt fortunate for that opportunity.
Ann was known for her kind and loving spirit, always helping others and giving of herself. She did not hesitate to place others’ needs above her own especially those of her family who will miss her dearly.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband,James; brother John S. Bucan, sister-in-law Kathleen Yarmek Bucan and granddaughter Donnel M. Fry. She leaves behind her children: Rose Fry (Don) of Erie, KS; James Cost (Cathy) of Kansas City, Mo; Grandchildren: Michael Cost (Deanna) of Hoffman Estates, Ill; Allen Cost of Kansas City, Mo; Jordan Cost of Kansas City, Mo; Lynnette Brehm of Burlington, WA; Brian Fry; Brett Fry of Erie, KS; Christopher Fry (Jenifer) of Independence, KS. Great Grandchildren: Laynie Brehm, Taylor Fry, Fox Cost, Marcella Steinbauer, Luke Cost, Chino Brehm, Jett Cost, and Penelope Fry.
Services will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church in Kansas City, KS on Monday, May 6. Visitation at 10 AM followed by the rosary and Mass at 11 AM. Burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Donations may be made to Christ the King Church, 3024 N. 53rd, Kansas City, Kansas 66104.
