Helen was the 7th of 13 children born to Anton and Eva Kolich, immigrants from Croatia who settled on Strawberry Hill in Kansas City Kansas in 1910. The birth home of Helen and her siblings still belongs to the Kolich family. Helen married Robert Ernest Wells “Bob” in 1944 and had two children, Susan and Robert Ernest Jr., “Ernie.” Helen and Bob moved to Bakersfield California in 1960, and remained until the early 70’s when they returned to Kansas City after Bob became disabled. Helen worked at Montgomery Wards for over 35 years, while caring for her husband and aging siblings.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, spouse and daughter, brothers Mike, Steve “Lefty”, John “Big John”, Anthony “Koko”, and Eddy Kolich, and sisters Mary Rodina, Katie Bohnert, and Barbara Bartko. She is survived by her sisters Angie Lewis, Velma Andrisevic, Virginia Orel, and Rose Thomas, sisters in law Dorothy Swinney (Jack) and JoAnn Kolich, son-in-law Cary Stephens, son Ernie and wife Susan, grandsons Jacob (Leah), Zachary (Brooke), and Robby Wells, Cory Stephens (Tammy), granddaughters Missy Hardy (Lance), Shellie Middleton (Bobby), Jennifer Massie (David), and 13 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Riverbend Post-Acute Rehabilitation, especially Aimee Orel-Edwards, Freda Berry, Kandice Drake, Wendy Collene and Harbor Hospice for their gentle and loving care. Helen’s kind and giving manner will be missed by all who knew her.
Rosary to be said at 8:30 AM, followed by visitation at 9:00, and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 on Saturday November 17, 2018 at Christ the King Catholic Church located at 3024 No. 53rd Street, Kansas City Kansas. Donations may be made to Christ the King Church.
