Shirley Elaine Abbott, 71, of Kansas City, KS, passed into the loving hands of our Lord on Sunday (12/30/18). She was born in 1947, to Bob and Evelyn Hendrickson in Kansas City, Mo.
She attended St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth, KS and Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, KS where she was a member of the National Honor Society.
Shirley was a woman who blazed her own path in life and never felt pressure to follow the crowd. Known for her intelligence, strong will and quick wit, she taught her five kids to be independent thinkers and not be afraid to challenge the norm. She was an advocate and believer in health foods and alternative medicine long before it was “cool.”
She owned and operated Heartland Health Foods in KCK for many years which was started by her brother, Don. She valued the many friendships she developed with her customers over the years, and they came to rely on her as a trusted source of information and help. Heartland faithfully served the Wyandotte County community for over 30 years.
Shirley’s Christian faith was very important to her and she always welcomed the opportunity to pray with others. She supported many ministries and organizations throughout her lifetime including: 700 Club, Joel Osteen Ministries, Gideons International, St. Jude’s Hospital and Special Olympics.
Survivors include her five children: Angela Abbott, Carrie (Nate) Odgaard, Lacy Wittkopp, Abby (John) Delich and Tyler Abbott, 13 grandchildren, one great grandchild and her sisters, Suzanne Hendrickson and Sheryl Horak. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Don Hendrickson.
Celebration of Life: Friday, January 18th at 1 pm. Shawnee United Methodist Church, 10700 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS. Luncheon following service: Sutera’s Pizza, 22716 Midland Dr. Shawnee, KS. Private Burial, Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Memorials in care of the family.
