We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Mary Butler Meyers Funeral Home
Judith “Judy” K. Pope, age 76, passed away on May 25, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospice House.
Judy was the youngest child of Karl and Vivian Smith. She was born and raised in Kanas City, Kansas and graduated from Wyandotte High School, where she spent many years serving as the school mascot. Yes, she was a life-long “Dotte”. After high school, she married the love of her life, David Pope. She loved him so much she married him twice!
Judy worked for Southwestern Bell/AT&T and retired from there in 1993. After her husband’s passing, she went back to school at the age of 50 to become a medical assistant. She worked as an assistant to Dr. Michael Parra for over 10 years. At work she was known as the office “mom” and had quite the sense of humor.
Judy enjoyed many activities during her years, such as bowling, poker and traveling, just to name a few. She loved listening to her daughter’s singing performances, and watching her sons play ball, which is something she continued to enjoy with her granddaughters and great grandkids. In her youth, Judy was athletic and liked competition and later in life, she even beat lung cancer!
Judy loved celebrations with family. No matter the occasion, Judy was always early and never arrived empty-handed. Judy enjoyed cooking, and it always gave her family a laugh when she would bring an abundance of mashed potatoes to gatherings. On a typical day, you could find Judy watching her shows, which included Ellen, Rachel Ray, or a cooking show, and perfecting her new skill of sewing.
Judy was preceded in death by parents, Karl and Vivian Smith, sister Barbara (Edward) Placke, and her husband, David Pope.
She is survived by brother, Gary Smith (Texas); children, Tim Pope (Kansas City, MO), Julie (William) Feden (Tonganoxie, KS), Steven (Katie) Pope (Kansas City, KS); Grandchildren Heather (Nicholas) McCarty, Hillary (Anthony) Schuberger, Madison Pope, Eva Jo Kibar, and Ryker Pope; Great-grandchildren William, Waylon and Jonnie McCarty and Rowden, Henley, and Rip Schuberger. She is also survived by countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends including the Spaws, the Spencers, and the Poterbins.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 from 5:30-7pm, and to share memories and stories from 7-7:30pm at Mary Butler Meyers Funeral Home, 6300 Parallel Pkwy, Kansas City, KS. Funeral service will be Thursday, June 2, 2022, 10:00am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church 1086 N. 94th St., Kansas City, KS. Luncheon at the parish hall will follow the service.
