Larry R Nelson (known as “Bubba” passed away on Sunday 9-4-2022 in Kansas City,
Ks. Larry was born in St. Joseph, MO and is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kay Nelson. And
daughters Heidi Nelson of KCKS and Randi Gladwell of Kansas City, MO.
Larry and Kay were married 7-29-1972 in St. Joseph, MO. Larry served 20 years in the
army and national guard. He was employed by ABC (Auto Body Color) from 1986 to 2020 at
locations in St. Joseph, Mo., DesMoines, IA, and Kansas City, KS.
Larry and Kay have 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren (3 greatgrandchildren
pending). Heidi Nelson & Brad Plowman of KCKS children are: Kaylee Plowman
AKA “Squirrel” of Leavenworth, KS (kids Junior and Avaeh); and Baylee Plowman of KCMO.
Randi and husband John Gladwell of KCMO children are Brandon Scholl (wife Iman) and
daughters Bella and Paris of KCMO; Morgan Son (husband Tyler), son Jayden and one on the
way; of KCMO. Maddison Calderon (husband Zach) daughter Ellie and pending twins of
Smithville, MO.
Larry is also survived by sisters Peggy Laizure of Norman, OK and Donna Bowlin of St.
Joseph, MO and brothers Jeff Johnston and wife Michelle of Scotts Bluff, NE. Roger Johnston
and wife Holly of St. Joseph, MO. Larry was predeceased by brothers Richard Johnston and
Gary Rusco, and his parents Don Nelson and Geraldine Mignery, and stepmother Kathleen
Nelson. Larry Considered ABC his “Family”: Danny and Linda Somerhouser, Marel Hardin and
Lester Tapp. Bubba also loved his adopted girls Collette Creach and daughter Kindelle, son
Cameron, and Heather Black and son, Ke’Von, and Kelly Yoe. Bubba’s sister-in-Law, Laurie
Lombard and her daughter Jamie of Joshua, TX and Laurie’s Granddaughter Anna Dialo of
Houston, TX were his “Brown eyed” Girls.
Larry was retired and loved spending time with his family and friends. He always knew
how to make you laugh and smile. Larry had the biggest heart, most of us would refer that to
having a heart of gold. In Larry’s younger days he loved playing men's slow pitch, he loved to
bowl, loved to go to nascar races and dirt racing, He also enjoyed camping and trout fishing.
