Steven Martin Downing, 63, passed away on June 30th, 2021, at Overland Park Medical Regional, in Overland Park, Kansas. He was born on July 20th, 1957, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Eugene and Louise Leavey Downing. He was raised in Kansas City, Kansas. He graduated from Bishop Ward High School in 1975. After high school, he attended Kansas City Area Vocational-Technical School, where he earned a certification in Welding. He began work for Chloride Industrial Battery as a plant manager, was later hired at Colgate Palmolive as a maintenance man, and was ultimately hired at the Griffin Wheel Company, as a safety trainer and furnace operator. He was involved in the Knights of Columbus, and he also served as a Eucharistic Minister at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed hobbies and interests such as drag racing, painting, and being an audiophile.
Steven is preceded in death by his father, Eugene Bland Downing; mother, Louise Frances Leavey Downing; brother, Rickard Downing and daughter, Amy L. Downing. Steven is survived by his son, Steven Bland Downing; daughter, Jessica Louise Downing; stepdaughters, Crystal Thompson and Christina Stevens; grandchildren, Amberia Gabaree, Serenity Gabaree, Leslie Garay, Rosa Garay, and Logan Quarles; nieces, Trisha Campbell and Ravenne Kopecky; nephews, Brett Downing and Jeff Downing, and a host of other friends and relatives.
A visitation will be held at Butler Meyers Funeral Home, 6300 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas 66102 at 12:00 PM (noon) to 2 PM, on Friday, July 9th, 2021. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, 701 N. 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112. The Family wishes to extend their gratitude to all of the pallbearers, the staff at Ken’s Sunflower Pharmacy, Dr. Renjini R. Chandra, Robert Davis, Father Mark Mertes, Butler Meyers Funeral Home, and Chapel Hill Cemetery.
